There is abundant money for college just waiting for students to use, but most have no idea what financial aid is available to them and how to obtain it.

Tonight, Dec. 19, there will we be a Financial Aid Information Night held in the Library. Occurring once a year after college applications, this event is designed to help those interested in financial aid. Although anyone can attend, tonight’s program is geared mainly toward seniors.

"This night is important for students as well as parents, "said Hercules High School Counselor Prudence Kent. "This event will them give ideas of all the public and private money out there."
With an overview on all types of financial aid, from loans and grants to scholarships, this Information Night will help clarify the financial aid process and familiarize students with their options. Many different monetary choices, such as Cal Grants and private scholarships will be introduced and explained.

Requirements to receive cash for college can either be financial or merit based. Financial aid is rewarded on a variety of criteria, including a student's achievements, heritage or plans for the future. Cal grants, which can only be used with schools in California, have GPA requirements of 2.0 and above.

Last year’s Information Night received positive feedback from students who felt it was a very informative event.

There will be two follow-up workshops in January and February as well as additional presentations in Government classes. If students miss the program or would like more information, they should go see Kent or fellow counselor John Tietjen.
